5 MOST DIFFICULT STAINS TO REMOVE FROM CARPETS

Carpets are an investment in your home’s comfort and looks.

They feel great to walk on and nothing beats the beauty of a clean, new carpet. Unfortunately, in any home, there’s always a risk of spilling something that’ll stain them and let’s face it—we all love Fido but pet accidents are bound to happen. While today’s carpets are more resistant to stains than those that adorned your parent’s home, they aren’t immune to them.

LIST OF WORST OFFENDERS

Here are the top five things that are hardest to get out of your carpet:

  1. Pet mess
  2. Blood and other bodily fluids
  3. Coffee and tea
  4. Red wine
  5. Ink

HOW TO DEAL WITH CARPET STAINS ON YOUR OWN

If a spill is still fresh on your carpet, there are steps you can take to minimize the potential stain. Here’s what to do:

  • Pick up any solids carefully. Gently remove any solid mess from the carpet using gloved hands, two pieces of cardboard or a dustpan. Make sure not to press in into the fibres, as this can make it harder to get rid of.
  • Blot the excess liquid. Using clean paper towels or white rags (coloured cloths or rags may mark pale carpets), press the stain to soak up as much of the spill as possible. Repeat using fresh towels until the spill is almost dry. Never scrub a stain, as this can cause the substance to settle deeper into the carpet.
  • Rinse. What you use will depend on the type of stain you’re dealing with. Water and vinegar are effective for many spills. Club soda is effective with red wine and other acidic substances. Ink stains are extremely tough and best left to the professionals. Special enzymatic cleaners should be used on pet stains to neutralize odours.

Keep in mind that while these steps will help, you may not be able to completely remove the stain without a professional cleaning service.

BEWARE OF BECOMING “NOSE-BLIND”

Even if you do succeed in removing the visual marks, stains can leave behind smells. Because we get used to the smells of our own homes, you may not notice these odours anymore. Having your carpets professionally cleaned when they’re dirty is the best to ensure that the stain — and smell — is truly gone and not just invisible.
