OUR GUIDE TO LEATHER UPHOLSTERY RESTORATION & MAINTENANCE

If your leather furniture needs some attention and you’re not sure how to approach it, Pointe-Claire Carpet Cleaning is here to help!

Leather is one of the most durable upholstery materials available, and it doesn’t require much maintenance. However, even though it’s long-lasting, it can still be damaged if you’re not careful. Here are some things Pointe-Claire Carpet Cleaning suggests you do to ensure your leather furniture retains its look and feel over time.

Be Careful with DIY Cleaning

Many websites suggest using vinegar, lemon juice and other homemade cleaning agents for their leather upholstery cleaning, but we recommend exercising caution before applying such solutions. It’s important to know what kind of leather you’re working with prior to using any kind of cleaning product on it. There are different types, but untreated aniline leather is the most susceptible to damage from harsh products. Most leather furniture is made of protected leather, however, of which there are several types, including semi-aniline and coated leathers. Protected leather is a bit sturdier, but care should still be taken in determining which products are safe to use. Knowing what type of leather you have will help you figure out how to clean it. The manufacturers’ pamphlet that came with your furniture will often give specific instructions on how to care for your purchase. If you don’t have a pamphlet, you can check the manufacturer’s website or contact them to see if they can provide more information.

Simple Cleaning Methods are Often Best

The best way to perform a leather couch cleaning is to vacuum all surfaces and cracks, and then wipe everything down with a lint-free cloth. If needed, you can use a damp cloth and a mild soap mixed with water (think face soap, not dish soap). Afterwards, wipe off the soap with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking the leather, however, as it’s absorbent and may become water-damaged. In terms of spills, be sure to soak them up right away with a towel and allow the wet leather to air dry. Don’t attempt to use a hair dryer, which could damage the leather. There are a variety of leather furniture products available on the market that can help you clean and remove stains. Be sure you’re using the stuff made for upholstery! Never apply saddle soap or furniture polish. Test any product on an inconspicuous area before using over the entire piece.

Restoring Cracked or Faded Leather

For leather couch conditioning, you may want to purchase specialized products that will reduce the look of cracks. Leather repair kits will contain leather re-colourants that can recolour the fibers between cracks, and leather binders that will soak into the fibers between the cracks and strengthen them. These processes can improve the look and feel of your leather furniture, but they can’t repair the damage completely.
