Though bed bug infestations were once a thing of the past, thanks to the rise of international travel, urban centres like Montreal are now experiencing a major bed bug resurgence. But spotting these creepy crawlies doesn’t have to be a source of panic.
Rather, if you discover an infestation, careful management and treatment of the problem can help you clear your home of these pests for good.
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are round, flat insects about the size of an apple seed. They live in mattresses, as their name suggests, but also in furniture, behind headboards and in the cracks in floors and walls. As the old adage “don’t let the bed bugs bite” suggests, these parasites feed on human blood. Because they’re easily transported in luggage and on clothing, they’ve been known to infest libraries, thrift stores and department stores. Infestations are particularly frustrating because the insects can lie dormant for very long periods of time between blood meals — up to a year! — leading to recurring infestations.
Prevention is key
Many people associate bed bugs with dirty places (sketchy hostels might come to mind). But bed bugs can be found even in five-star hotels. When you travel, make it a habit to check your room for bed bugs as soon as you arrive. If you find any signs, demand a different room.
How do you know if you have them?
Bites are often the first sign of an infestation. Bed bugs feed off of exposed patches of skin, and their bites typically leave behind itchy welts. If you suspect you have bed bugs in your home, you’ll need to search for signs. Look for the bugs themselves, their excretions (which look like small black or rusty spots) and egg or bug shells. Make sure you inspect your mattress carefully, including all seams and underneath the box spring, as well as your headboard, inside and underneath dresser drawers, around couch cushions, underneath couches and in and under carpet.
What to do if you have bed bugs
A good exterminator will help you get rid of bed bugs, but there are many things you can do to reduce the chances of them coming back. Bed bugs hate heat, so you’ll want to take advantage of your washing machine and dryer’s hottest settings to wash all clothes, bedding, and curtains. Upholstery cleaning is also important; wipe down furniture with a stiff brush and vacuum it carefully. Seal away vacuum bags and dispose of them outdoors with your trash. For carpets and rugs, professional steam cleaning will help kill bed bugs, and regular vacuuming will help keep them away. A professional mattress cleaning can also be performed to ensure the last remnants are completely wiped out and you can sleep easy knowing that nothing lurks beneath your sheets.
